ARSONISTS tried to torch a carpet warehouse in Huddersfield last night as trouble arrived in town.

Police responded to six incidents of disorder in Huddersfield last night - making five arrests.

The arrests were of men aged between 17 and 23.

Reports included an incident at Asda on Bradford Road when a group of thugs tried to steal TVs from the shop but were foiled.

A large police presence cleared the 24-hour store's car park and ensured the building was secure after it closed at 10pm.

It reopened as usual this morning.

There was also an incident at Deighton and Sheepridge WMC on Sheepridge Road at 10pm where a man suffered a leg injury and the club was damaged.

The Chestnut Centre on Chestnut Street, Deighton was also attacked and a cash machine was stolen from the inside of the building.

At 1.10am at United Carpets on Union Street arsonists smashed a glass door and made attempts to set alight to the inside of the building.

Paving slabs were thrown through the front windows of the premises of John L Brierley at Turnbridge Mills on Quay Street.

Police also responded to incidents reported at the Aldi and Matalan stores on the Ringway Industrial Estate off Bradford Road and a Lidl store in town.

There were also reports from Harpe Inge in Dalton of groups of youths setting fire to wheeled-bins.

A police spokesman said there were also several reports across Huddersfield of youths wearing masks and roaming around streets.
