Kirkburton pub landlords Alan and Elaine Jarvis struggle as rent barrels out of control
IT COULD be last orders for a popular Huddersfield pub landlord.
Enterprise Inns are hiking up rents by £5,000 a year – meaning Alan and Elaine Jarvis, of the White Swan in Kirkburton, may have to close their doors.
The couple, who have run the Penistone Road pub for over five years, have transformed it into a bustling local.
But recently Enterprise Inns, which leases the pub to them, has dramatically increased the cost of rent, barrels and insurance.
The couple say it makes it difficult for them to survive – unless they charge punters almost £4 a pint.
Alan said: “They want to hike up our rent by £5,000, from £13,000 to £18,000 and I don’t know where they think we are supposed to get that money from.
“Along with that, we are tied down to buying barrels from them.
“Per barrel of Carling or Tetley’s, they are charging us £200 more than what it would cost if I bought it free trade.
“This results in us having to charge up to a £1 more for a pint than those free of tie pubs.
“I couldn’t charge my customers £3.90 a pint, they would stop coming and they wouldn’t buy it.
“I am charging £3.05 and am losing £100 a week because of it.
“I have told Entrerprise this but they still won’t move on it or negotiate.”
Alan’s fight against the rent rises means that he will have to quit the pub he loves by September 26.
