Tributes paid to crash victim Gary Pedelty at memorial match

HUNDREDS of relatives, friends and team-mates turned out for a match to remember a rugby player tragically killed in a road accident.

Gary Pedelty, 24, from Meltham, died in a head-on crash on Huddersfield Road, between Meltham and Netherton, in November.

Yesterday his family and former team, Meltham All Blacks, held their first annual Gary Pedelty Memorial Match against Hanging Heaton.

Following a minute’s silence in Gary’s honour, Meltham won the game at Broadlands Recreation Ground 28-10 to become the first team to lift the trophy bearing Gary’s name.

All Black back Scott Jackson was awarded man of the match.

Watching the match were Gary’s mother Aletia and father Kevin.

Mrs Pedelty, 43, said: “It went really well. We had a couple of hundred there.

“It was a really good atmosphere. A lot of Gary’s friends came over from different clubs and all his family were there. It was great to see everyone.

“We just don’t want anyone to forget. It’s all about keeping Gary’s memory alive.”

Mrs Pedelty said her family had been struggling to deal with their loss.

She said: “It took my mind off it a little, but we were pleased to see everyone there for Gary.
