THE sight of new born lambs frolicking in a field is usually a sign spring is upon us.
But late arrivals Dick and Steve – named after the builders that saved them and their mother – are summer babies.
No-one at their home in Cannon Hall Farm, Cawthorne, realised that the twin lambs’ mother was pregnant as lambing season finishes in Easter.
The ewe was out in a field at the farm when she went into labour – but she ran into difficulties and was struggling to give birth.
Her plight was spotted by builders Richard Dickinson, from Skelmanthorpe, and Steve Coles who were working on a house in the neighbouring field.
They spotted the distressed animal and rang one of the farm owners.
Farm director Richard Nicholson told the Examiner: “We didn’t know the sheep was pregnant – it must have sneaked in with a ram somehow.
“It’s unusual for this time of year because normally the ewes wouldn’t come into season now.
“Our lambing season here is from Christmas until Easter.
