IDENTICAL twins have notched up an amazing 19 A* GCSEs between them.

Sixteen-year-olds Matthew and Adam Waterson, from Fenay Bridge, astounded their parents as they revealed two sets of outstanding results.

Matthew, who is the oldest twin by 10 minutes achieved 10 A* grades while Adam gained nine.

Adam said: “We were really nervous when we got our brown envelopes. We didn’t want to open them or see what was inside.

“We opened them together and were really relieved when we saw our results.

“We worked hard during study leave but it’s difficult to say how many hours exactly we worked.

“We both play in a brass band so we went to practice as well.

“There is a healthy level of competition between us. We always want to see who has done better in tests and then we compare but we are not ridiculously competitive.”

The boys took similar GCSEs including maths, physics, chemistry, biology, English literature, English language, geography and music.

Matthew achieved an A* in French and an A in German while Adam gained an A in both French and Spanish.

They additionally took on ICT in which they both gained a distinction along with Citizenship and Religious Studies.

The Waterson twins are not the only family members to have excelled in their exams this summer.

Their older brother, Tim, achieved two A*s, an A and a B at A level last week and is due to go to Jesus College in Oxford to study history and economics.
