A MAN injured in a street brawl in Thornhill Lees has died.

And a man has appeared in court charged with his murder.

Nisar Shah, of Dewsbury, made a brief appearance yesterday charged with the murder of 39-year-old Jack Carter.

Mr Carter died on Wednesday night in Dewsbury District Hospital, three days after being admitted with serious injuries.

He had been on a life-support machine in the hospital’s intensive care unit since the incident on Sunday evening.

Shah, 39, was remanded in custody after a brief hearing at Dewsbury Magistrates’ Court..

Police confirmed that a second man was still in custody in connection with Mr Carter’s death, which is now being investigated by the West Yorkshire Police Homicide and Major Enquiry team..

But two other men, who had been detained shortly after Sunday’s incident, have been released without charge.

Mr Carter, 39, was allegedly attacked in Victoria Road at the junction with Douglas Avenue at around 6.40pm on Sunday.

A number of people called emergency services after the incident.

Paramedics found the badly-injured man on the pavement and he was given treatment at the scene before being taken to hospital.

His parents Billy and Jackie maintained a vigil at his hospital bedside after the incident, as did other members of his family.

Mr Carter was working doing labouring jobs prior to the attack.

The victim had been living in Dewsbury and has three brothers and one sister.

Police said a number of inquiries were still being carried out in relation to the incident.
