AN ex-Huddersfield Giants player faces jail after he admitted attacking a woman in a Huddersfield bar.

Greg Johnson, of Newsome Road, Newsome, was due to stand trial at Bradford Crown Court yesterday.

The professional rugby league player was accused of smashing a glass in the face of secretary Belinda Kelly, neé Coldwell, after she rejected his advances at Yates Bar last February.

The attack could have cost the 26-year-old her sight and took place just three weeks before she was due to marry.

The 14½ stone winger was released by the Giants just days after the incident and now plays for Wakefield Wildcats.

He initially denied the attack.

But yesterday, following negotiations between his legal team and Mrs Kelly’s family, he changed his plea and admitted a lower offence of unlawful wounding.

Following the 1am attack, door staff at the King Street bar detained the 20-year-old rugby star.

But he escaped and fled on foot through the streets of Huddersfield followed by Street Marshalls.

He was arrested by police in the Aspley area.
