Kirklees Council considers £2m upgrade to Huddersfield Ring Road to cope with new Kirklees College campus on Manchester Road
TWO of Huddersfield’s busiest roads are in line for a £2m upgrade.
Councillors will decide next week whether to improve the highways network around the new Kirklees College campus.
Officers have drawn up a £1.9m plan to deal with the huge increase in pedestrian traffic when the building near Huddersfield ring road opens to students next year.
The £74m campus is being built on a triangle of land between Chapel Hill, Manchester Road and the River Colne.
Kirklees Council’s Cabinet will decide next week whether to help fund the upgrade to the area.
The work includes:
Improved puffin crossings on the ring road, Chapel Hill and Manchester Road to help cope with the large number of students going to and from the college
New puffin crossings at the junction of Chapel Hill and Colne Road and at the new campus entrance on Manchester Road
Resurfacing and re-kerbing pavements in the area
Improvements to drainage, street lighting and traffic signs around the campus.
The upgrade, which will cause disruption on the ring road, is due to get underway this month with Phase 1 – the two-month long improvement to Outcote Bank.
