TWO stars from the world of boxing made a surprise guest appearance in Cleckheaton at the weekend.
Amir Khan, World Boxing Association (WBA) and International Boxing federation (IBF) Light Welterweight unified world champion, and Dewsbury’s Gary Sykes, British super featherweight champion, helped local boxers and their families celebrate Cleckheaton Boxing Academy’s gala and open day.
The event marked the Academy’s move to new premises at Marsh Works in Cleckheaton.
The two champions spent time talking to young boxing hopefuls, stressing the importance of positive activities and a healthy and active lifestyle.
Cleckheaton Boxing Academy was established in 1975 by Keith Tate and has produced an impressive 30 national champions and three professional world champions.
Keith, who is also head coach, said: “We will continue to provide opportunities for boxing, to make champions and create successful communities”.
Ashley Lucas, Kirklees’ sports development officer, said: “We have been working with Cleckheaton Boxing Academy over the last year to help them develop facilities and activities for young people through the Midnight Boxing scheme.
“It was great to see Amir and Gary valuing the importance of amateur boxing and taking time to talk to the young people and give them the inspiration and motivation to succeed.”
