Community on key at Longwood Sing

THE rain failed to dampen spirits as villagers turned out for the annual Longwood Sing yesterday.

And after the second hymn the rain clouds lifted and umbrellas were dropped to the floor to allow the historic group sing-a-long at Nab End Tower to take place under clear skies.

The annual event, now in its 138th year, saw a community join together in song above St Mark’s Church at Longwood Gate.

Director of Music Gareth Bowman said: “It is perhaps fitting that we should gather here on heritage day and what better way to celebrate than carry on our heritage of the Longwood Sing.”

Golcar Brass Band provided a musical accompaniment to the occasion alongside classes from Crow Lane Junior and Infants School, Milnsbridge.

Retaining a traditional theme, this year’s hymns included I Will Sing The Wondrous Story, Love Divine, All Loves Excelling and uplifting classic Jerusalem.
