EXPECTANT mums in Huddersfield are being urged to avoid alcohol for the sake of their unborn babies.
If an unborn child is exposed to alcohol in the womb they can suffer with a group of problems known collectively as Foetal Alcohol Syndrome.
These include restricted growth and facial abnormalities as well as learning and behavioural disorders.
The risk of exposing an unborn baby to complications is increased in relation to the amount of alcohol consumed.
Paul Johnstone, regional director for public health at NHS Yorkshire and the Humber, said: “The safest thing for mother and baby, during pregnancy, is to avoid alcoholic drinks altogether.
“Alcohol, if drunk by the mother-to-be, is transferred to the unborn child through blood travelling to the placenta.
“Because the baby is unable to process the alcohol in the same way as an adult this can cause long term damage.”
Expectant mums used to having a drink to de-stress are advised to try new activities instead.
These can be taking a bubble bath, listening to music, or walking in the park.
