Highways Agency issue strong wind warnings

WINDS of up to 80mph forced the Highways Agency to shut a road through Yorkshire.

The Snake Pass, south of Holme Moss, was shut down to all vehicles as the gales hit and warning signs reading ‘strong winds slow down’ were posted along the M62.

It was part of an amber alert issued to drivers of high-sided vehicles, caravans and motorbikes who were at risk of being blown over by the strong winds. Drivers travelling along the M62 between Junctions 23 Outlane and Junction 25 at Brighouse were warned to take special care. Agency spokesman Neil Sterio said: “The A628 Woodhead Pass linking Sheffield to Manchester has been closed to all vehicles because of high winds and the Highways Agency’s traffic officers at the North East Regional Control Centre set signs along parts of the motorway network advising drivers to slow down due to strong winds.” The A66 and the A69 North West to North East trans-Pennine routes were also identified by the agency as high-blow over risk spots. The Highways Agency worked with the Met Office to monitor conditions and ensure the roads are safe.

One of the UK’s elite cycle races fell victim to severe gales as the remnants of Hurricane Katia hit British shores.

The second stage of the Tour of Britain was cancelled for safety reasons due to high winds across the competition route in Cumbria and Lancashire. Tour of Britain riders were instead participating in an exhibition lap around Kendal, Cumbria, before reconvening tomorrow morning for the third stage of the race in Stoke-on-Trent, Staffs.

And visitors to parts of the Yorkshire coast, including Bridlington, were advised to steer clear of the promenade as gales whipped up high tides.
