Man in court following kick to the head

A MAN who kicked another man in the head following an argument has appeared in court.

Alan Campbell, of Lonsborough Flats, Southgate, Huddersfield, pleaded guilty to assaulting Paul Clarke on John William Street.

Huddersfield magistrates were told that police were called following an altercation between the pair outside a takeaway on the street. The victim was seen on CCTV acting aggressively towards Campbell, who then punched him to the floor and kicked him in the head.

Mr Clarke suffered from blurred vision as a result of the attack. Following his arrest Campbell, 36, told police that he acted in self-defence.

His solicitor Bob Carr said: “This incident was absolutely no fault initially of Mr Campbell. He had been out and not drunk, (while) the complainant was very drunk.

“The man swung a punch, totally unprovoked on Mr Campbell who reacted by punching him back.”

Sentencing Campbell, magistrates told him they had considered the fact the attack had been provoked.

But they deemed the affect of the attack and the fact that it had been in a public place as serious.

They sentenced Campbell to 18 months’ supervision with an electronically monitored curfew for five months.

He was also ordered to pay £250 court costs.
