Six arrested in Batley after shots fired

SIX men have been arrested after a shooting drama.

Shots were fired at three different locations in Batley.

Police believe all the incidents are linked.

The latest incident happened in the early hours of yesterday morning in Conway Crescent, Batley, when windows and front doors were damaged.

At 5am the previous evening (Sunday) police were called to a house at Hawthorn Avenue.

And a further incident was reported shortly after midnight on Saturday in Manor Way, Batley.

Yesterday, there were visible signs of gunshot damage to the door of the house in Conway Crescent.

Hasaim Mota, 69, lives near one of the houses which was hit.

He said: “I woke up and heard a loud bang. I looked outside and there were police outside and a house had been cordoned off.

“I have lived here for 22 years and I have never heard of a shooting here before.”

He said the house was occupied by a woman in her 50s, who has sons but was home alone at the time.

A West Yorkshire Police spokesman said: “On each occasion officers were called to reports that a firearm had been discharged at the properties.

“Each property’s windows and the front door had been damaged. No-one was injured.”

Six local men aged 19 to 28 have since been arrested on suspicion of firearms and criminal damage offences.

All six remain in police custody at the time of going to press.

Det Chief Insp Simon Bottomley, from the Homicide and Major Enquiry Team (HMET), said: “We believe the three incidents are linked and are appealing for anyone with any information to speak in confidence.”
