No end in sight for Emley lorry problems

EMLEY residents look set to lose a fight to ban lorries from their village.

A petition seeking to ban wagons from many streets in the village has been handed to Kirklees Council.

But councillors meeting later today are to be told that the problem is not severe enough to warrant a ban.

The big concern for many residents is the number of lorries who use Emley as a route to and from the M1 motorway, rather than the traditional route through Flockton.

New traffic restrictions in Flockton have added to delays for vehicles, particularly at peak times.

But council highways officers who have studied the problems in Emley have insisted there is not enough lorry traffic to warrant a weight ban.

They will, however, recommend to councillors that new signs about the existing 7.5tonne weight restriction on some roads are erected.

And West Yorkshire Police are to be asked to carry out checks on vehicles using Emley.

The petition seeks to ban large lorries from roads including Jagger Lane, Chapel Lane, Upper Lane, Ash Lane, Church Street, Rectory Lane, Clough Lane and Woodhouse Lane.
