Huddersfield councillor worried vandal hit skate park could be closed

A WORRIED councillor has said a popular skate park could be axed after vandals destroyed it for the fourth time in three years.

More than £1,000 has been spent on repairing Skelmanthorpe Skate park following repeated vandalism.

Attacks on the Cross Lane park have included arson and thugs have deliberately smashed through ramps with a sledgehammer on several occasions.

The latest attack has seen vandals rip down safety fencing and Denby Dale Tory Clr Jim Dodds said he was worried that the council may be forced to close it down.

He said: “I don’t know why it’s being vandalised over and over. This is not just one-off vandalism, it’s an ongoing thing.

“The agreement when we took the site on was that we would maintain what was there as far as possible but what was destroyed would be removed.

“The fencing around the top of the ramps has been replaced three times, once by me personally.

“Each time the rails, even when wired on, are pulled off within days if not hours and someone is attacking the supports with knives and other tools.

“The ramp surface has also been replaced twice after it was put through with what must have been a sledgehammer.
