THE fight to save the jobs of disabled workers will be stepped up this week.
A public meeting over the threat to jobs at the Remploy factory in Waterloo will be held in Huddersfield Town Hall on Wednesday.
Remploy workers will be joined by councillors and union officials to gather public support for their campaign. The factory is one of many threatened with closure after the Government announced plans to withdraw funding.
Remploy, which has 54 factories across the UK, employs hundreds of people with physical and learning disabilities in the region. The factories include one at Tandem Industrial Estate, Waterloo, which makes headrests for motor vehicles and employs about 35 people.
Union leaders claim if proposals go ahead 4,000 workers will lose their jobs. Wednesday’s meeting at 7pm has been called by the Huddersfield Trades Union Council.
Speakers will include Remploy worker James Stribley, Kirklees leader Clr Mehboob Khan and Mick Rix, a national official of the GMB union.
Bob Stoker, Huddersfield TUC secretary, said: “The Coalition Government must not be allowed to carry out yet another round of closures.”
