More cameras planned for Huddersfield taxis

MORE taxis in Huddersfield are to be fitted with security cameras.

Kirklees councillors yesterday agreed to allow both private hire drivers and hackney cabbies to have advertising on their vehicles.

But there was a condition imposed by members of the council’s licensing and safety committee.

“We felt that the taxis who want to make money out of company advertising should give something back and install cameras,” said committee member Clr Christine Iredale.

“We are always concerned about the safety of both drivers and passengers and a condition of them allowing advertising is that the cabs should have cameras installed.

“In the past the council has part funded this project but the take-up has not been good”.

The committee also backed a recommendation not to push ahead with a penalty points scheme for taxi drivers.

It was regarded as too unwieldy to work and would create problems both in terms of funding and in officers’ time.
