Artists impression of new design for Tesco in Holmfirth

PEOPLE are being given the chance to have their say on plans for a new smaller Tesco store in Holmfirth.

The proposals for a superstore at the site of the former Midlothian Garage on New Mill Road have created controversy.

But the retail giant is hoping that two public forums in Holmfirth, starting tomorrow, will give them the opportunity to state their case.

They have unveiled an artist’s impression of how the new store could look.

They have also distributed 6,000 newsletters about the proposals to homes throughout Holmfirth.

And tonight, Tesco senior managers are meeting with traders and business people from Holmfirth who are concerned about the plan.

Tesco say the new store would create up to 175 new jobs, and include a number of changes to the original Tesco scheme for the site which was proposed in 2009.

The new plans include a smaller-sized supermarket, more sustainable features to reduce the store’s carbon footprint and a plan to make the development single storey.

The original plan featured a roof covered in moss, to blend in with the landscape, but that idea was dropped when the final version was submitted to planners.

That plan was rejected by Kirklees Council.
