Emley Cross repair plans still up in the air council admits

KIRKLEES Council has admitted it does not know when it will fix an ancient monument that was smashed by a bus.

The Emley Cross, which dates back to the early 13th century, was damaged last May when it was clipped by a bus turning around it.

The 800-year-old structure, a listed Ancient Monument, was shunted off its mark at the junction of Church Street and Upper Lane.

The incident sheared a large chunk off the lower part of the plinth.

The monument is designated a Grade Two listed monument by English Heritage and so is the responsibility of Kirklees Council.

The Examiner revealed last August that the council officials had discussed moving the small monument but a spokesman said they were still unsure of their plans for the cross.

A spokesman for Kirklees Council said: “Such an ancient and important feature of the local area requires sympathetic repairs so that its character is maintained.

“As Emley Cross is a scheduled ancient monument, we are having to seek specialist advice and will also need approval from English Heritage for the repairs to be carried out.

“As a result there is currently no exact timescale for the work, but this is a process we have to follow.”
