THE OLYMPIC torch is coming to Huddersfield.
Organisers of the 2012 Games confirmed today that the town is on the historic route of the famous flame.
And next month, would-be torchbearers will find out if they have been chosen to carry it through Huddersfield and other parts of Yorkshire.
They include young Harry Crowther, of Mirfield.
The brave 12-year-old – who suffers from an extremely rare bone condition – is one of many thousands who applied to carry the flame.
Organisers have since emailed him to tell him he is through to the final round to find 8,000 inspirational people to carry the flame across the country.
The flame will be in Yorkshire from June 18 to 20 and June 24 to 27 and will visit every part of the region.
Huddersfield will get the flame on Sunday, June 24, and it will set off from Greenhead Park on a route which takes it through the town to Brighouse and other parts of West Yorkshire.
The following day the torch will start in Leeds and be carried on a route which includes Batley, Dewsbury and the Yorkshire Sculpture Park at Bretton.
Details of the historic event – set to be watched by hundreds of thousands of people – were revealed today by the London Organising Committee of the Olympic and Paralympic Games.
A spokesman said: “The Olympic Flame is set to visit every part of Yorkshire and Humber and the route achieves the optimum mix of proximity to people whilst taking in beautiful natural and urban landmarks to showcase Yorkshire and Humber around the world.
“The announcement of over 1,000 villages, towns and cities on the UK route means LOCOG has realised the aspiration of taking the Olympic Flame to within an hour’s journey time of 95% of the population.”
The street by street detail of the route will be confirmed next year.
Harry Crowther’s mum Sharon said: “It’s brilliant news.
“Harry is so excited and cannot wait to find out if he will be chosen.
“We should know in four weeks time and he’d love to be part of something that will go down in history. It will be great for the whole of Yorkshire.”
Sebastian Coe, who chairs the Olympics committee, said: “Today’s route announcement illustrates in detail just how the London 2012 Olympic Torch Relay will take the Games to almost every corner of Yorkshire.
“Everyone is now invited to plan their welcome and find out where they can go to be part of this historic occasion. The Olympic Games are coming to you and the Olympic Flame will give people across Yorkshire their moment to shine”.
