Huddersfield holds first-class tribute on Remembrance Sunday
HUNDREDS of people lined Huddersfield’s streets to honour war victims on Remembrance Sunday.
Miserable weather failed to deter serving and veteran soldiers, sailors and airmen – as well as their friends and families – for yesterday’s parade from Victoria Lane to Huddersfield Parish Church.
The marchers were joined by armed forces cadets, Huddersfield Brass Ensemble and Hade Edge Band who set the marching tempo.
It was standing room only inside Huddersfield Parish Church for a special remembrance service led by the vicar of Huddersfield, Canon Simon Moor.
Guests included Deputy Lieutenant of West Yorkshire Colonel Alan Roberts, Huddersfield MP Barry Sheerman and Deputy Kirklees Mayor Christine Iredale.
Following the service, which included a moving rendition of the Last Post, companies marched past Market Place and the war memorial where they were saluted by Col Roberts.
The procession continued to Ramsden Street where the companies and spectators were thanked by Clr Iredale and dismissed.
Thanking the Royal British Legion, Clr Iredale said: “As in previous years, the high attendance at today’s parade highlights the importance that local people continue to attach to Remembrance Sunday and everything that it represents.
“The support of local people to our servicemen and women and to organisations who work tirelessly to help them, their families and ex-servicemen and women in the town is something I am sure is very much appreciated and will, I am sure, continue for many years to come.”
Clr Iredale added: “For many, Remembrance Sunday brings back memories – some good, some bad. Inevitably, past comrades, and the sacrifice many of them made, feature heavily in our thoughts.”
Col Roberts, a former pro-chancellor of Leeds University, said: “It was outstanding.
“Huddersfield did an outstanding example as they always do when I am privileged to come here. It was first class.”
