Golcar woman Mandy Barwick nominated for top award during cancer battle

SHE’S well known for her charitable work – helping to raise £1.8million for the children’s hospice appeal and awareness for countless other good causes.

And now Mandy Barwick has been nominated for an award for her work – she’s shortlisted for the Network She Charity Fundraiser of the Year.

It comes as the Golcar woman is fighting breast cancer.

But the 43-year-old described the award as a great opportunity to promote charities, rather than to receive something for herself.

On Friday Mandy and her partner, Andrew Taylor, will attend the awards hosted by businesswoman Michelle Mone.

Mandy said: “This is my third cancer scare and it’s odd to say but I’ve become quite inspired by it.

“When I was diagnosed in July rather than curl up and feel sorry for myself I thought ‘let the battle commence’. Yes it’s taken some of my strength away, but I’m still working and haven’t slowed down.”

She had a tumour removed two years ago, but this time round it was breast cancer.

“I didn’t check myself as much as I should have done,” she added. “I’m one of those people who always needs 25 hours in a day. It was my doctor who found it, thankfully.

“I’ve had three operations, one to see if the cancer had travelled, which it hadn’t. Then I went in to have the tumour removed but that wasn’t the ultimate conclusion.

“I had a mastectomy and my amazing plastic surgeon wanted to reconstruct me at the same time with some radical and pioneering surgery.”
