CANALS in Huddersfield are set for a huge ‘makeover’.
A huge range of works are to take place over the coming months on both the Huddersfield Narrow Canal and the Calder and Hebble Navigation.
But first, a major “rescue” took place.
Waterways engineers have turned fishermen – to save hundreds of fish in the canal.
They were hard at work yesterday at Kirklees Top Lock near Bradley on the Calder and Hebble canal.
Hundreds of fish in the canal are being moved to other sections where the water levels are being maintained.
The team rescued species including pike, bream, roach and perch from a 425 metre stretch of the canal, where new lock gates are to be fitted.
The repairs, currently underway, are all part of the winter maintenance programme carried out by British Waterways every year.
They are set to cost more than £600,000 in the coming weeks and months.
National Campaigns Executive, Simon Henry said: “We are looking after a 200-year-old network so it is important we take care of it to make sure future generations can enjoy the canals and rivers.”
