Historic Huddersfield adult education centre up for sale
ONE of Huddersfield’s historic landmarks has just been put up for sale on the open market.
Adult education centre The Manse at 66, New North Road has been put on the market by owners Kirklees College.
A brochure has been produced, but no guide price has been announced.
Selling agents are Dove Haigh Phillips, of Leeds. The company has also been involved in brokering the deal between the college, the land owners and the construction company for the new £7.5m engineering centre off St Andrew’s Road.
Although the period building is not listed, it is situated within a conservation area.
Since 2008, when Kirklees College was formed by the amalgamation of Huddersfield Technical College and Dewsbury College, The Manse has been used as a hub for adult education and currently hosts 12 classes.
The centre is due to close by Christmas as part of the college estates’ strategy to prepare for the move to the new building at the Waterfront Quarter, about half a mile away.
From January, all classes and administration will move to the main New North road campus and from September 2012 to the Waterfront.
According to Kirklees College, this does not mean that anyone wishing to sign up for adult education classes will have to travel to central Huddersfield. It will continue to offer adult learning in 49 centres across Kirklees.
There are also plans to introduce a revitalised adult programme from January.
Melanie Brooke, college vice-principal for corporate services, said: “The sale of The Manse has always been part of the plans for the move to the new building.
“Adult learners will enjoy new, improved facilities in the secure and pleasant surroundings of the new college centre from September 2012.”
The estate agents’ brochure is marketing The Manse as “period office premises” located over two floors and a basement, comprising 2,269 square feet (314 square metres).
