Kirklees Council rules out extra bin round to deal with backlog from public sector strike

RESIDENTS will not receive an extra bin collection following the public sector strike.

A top councillor last night revealed there would be no catch-up rounds after last Wednesday’s industrial action.

No bins were collected in Kirklees on the strike day as refuse collectors joined millions of other public sector workers in a huge walkout to protest against pension changes.

And last night Cabinet member for investment and housing Clr David Sheard confirmed that residents whose bins went unemptied last week will have to wait until the next scheduled collection next Wednesday before their rubbish is taken away.

An opposition councillor challenged the ruling Labour group on the issue at last night’s monthly meeting of Kirklees Council.

Colne Valley Lib Dem Clr David Ridgway asked Clr Sheard: “Can you advise what provision, if any, the Cabinet has put in place to ensure that those bins which were not emptied last Wednesday will be emptied before the two-week cycle is complete?”
