THE mum of a four-year-old boy hurt in a dog attack is calling for a change in the law.
Little Leo McInerney could be scarred for life after he was bitten by a friend’s Japanese Akita in Newsome earlier this week.
But because the incident happened in the dog’s own home, police say they are powerless to do anything about it.
Leo’s mum, 26-year-old Kelly McInerney, is appalled by the decision.
She said: “It is absolutely disgusting that this dog has attacked a child and is being allowed to live.
“I want to make sure it never bites anyone again.”
Leo and his mum called at the friend’s house on Wednesday afternoon to collect his seven-year-old sister, Ella.
But as they walked into the living room, the dog’s owner – who doesn’t want to be named – was in the kitchen cleaning.
The dog – who had previously snapped at Leo several weeks ago when he was playing with him – went for his face, injuring his lips, cheek and nose.
“It all happened so quickly,” said Kelly, of St John’s Avenue.
“We had just walked in and Leo didn’t even take his coat off. We were still stood by the door and the dog just walked up to him and bit him.
“He screamed and I looked down and saw all the blood. I didn’t know what to do so I just walked out and took him straight home. Then we went to hospital.
“I was devastated. He was crying and there was blood everywhere.”
Leo was treated at Huddersfield Royal Infirmary for facial injuries and is now on a course of antibiotics to prevent infection.
But when Kelly reported the attack to the police, she was shocked by the response.
