HUDDERSFIELD MP Barry Sheerman last night blasted David Cameron for making a “dreadful, dreadful mistake” over the European Union (EU).
But the area’s two Conservative MPs yesterday backed the Prime Minister for walking away from negotiations to stabilise the euro.
Mr Cameron yesterday justified his decision not to sign an agreement with the other 26 members of the EU.
He told MPs: “Satisfactory safeguards were not forthcoming so I didn’t agree to the treaty.
“It was not the easy thing to do, but it was the right thing to do.”
The Prime Minister last week vetoed the plan after other leaders refused to allow Britain to opt-out of new regulations of financial services.
Huddersfield MP Barry Sheerman yesterday criticised Mr Cameron for vetoing the deal.
“In the long-term, this will lead to our isolation in Europe. British people will realise that this was a dreadful, dreadful mistake,” the Labour man told the Examiner.
“We should be in there making sure the euro does not collapse because, if it does, people in Huddersfield will see a collapse in employment and property prices which we’ve seen in Ireland.
“Margaret Thatcher had her reservations about Europe, but she never left a vacant seat – she was always there arguing Britain’s case.”
But Colne Valley MP Jason McCartney defended the veto.
