A WORLD Cup winner’s former business was destroyed by a huge fire in Huddersfield.
And the drama caused massive delays for rush-hour commuters.
The blaze broke out at a building in Outlane where former Huddersfield Town and England star Ray Wilson used to work.
The slip road on to the M62 at Junction 23 was closed until 4pm yesterday as firefighters dealt with the huge blaze and prepared to demolish the badly-damaged joiners’ workshop.
Fire broke out at the four-storey building next to the M62 at 6.20am yesterday.
Two fire crews from Huddersfield and one each from Brighouse and Elland raced to the scene on New Hey Road.
Highways Agency staff sealed off the slip road on to the westbound carriageway of the M62 at Junction 23, causing large tailbacks in the snow.
Huddersfield station commander Gary McKelvey rushed to the incident from his home in Scammonden yesterday morning. He told the Examiner: “There are two properties down there – a house and, right next to it, a joiners’ workshop.
“When I arrived there were flames breaking through the roof and all four storeys were on fire.
“Because it was a joiners’ shop there was lots of flammable material, like timber. A joiners’ shop creates a lot of sawdust and everything that could have burnt would have burnt.”
