More arrests in Huddersfield over “crash for cash” scams

POLICE have made 35 arrests in Huddersfield in connection with an alleged “crash for cash” scam.

They held people from all over the town this week as part of a huge investigation called Operation Thatcham.

And this week’s arrests brought to 60 the total number of people held so far in the inquiry, which is believed to involve hundreds of thousands of pounds.

The raids follow investigations which began into a business in Blackmoorfoot Road, Crosland Moor.

Throughout the week officers from Kirklees Police carried out raids across Huddersfield, arresting 35 people.

They were held on suspicion of conspiracy to commit fraud and money laundering offences.

Several thousand pounds cash and Class B drugs were also seized during the raids.

The arrest operation was the second phase of Operation Thatcham – a major fraud investigation into a cash for crash scam operating in Huddersfield.

Police said the first arrest phase of the operation saw 25 people arrested in October this year for fraud and money laundering offences.

Crash for cash scams across the UK are thought to cost the insurance industry many millions of pounds and have been blamed for forcing up insurance premiums for many drivers.
