A CALENDAR featuring images of days gone by has been compiled by a history group.

And it features paintings of Meltham buildings created by a late artist.

The calendar has been put together by the Old Meltham History Group, formed by the charity Friend to Friend.

It was set up to give older members of the community the opportunity to find out more about the history of Meltham and to meet and make new friends.

The group enjoyed tracing Meltham’s history back to the hunters of the middle stone age in 8000BC, through to the first named Melthamer’s in the Domesday Book to the present day.

The calendar is the result of a year’s hard work from the group.

They looked at the town’s history and tied it in with the artwork which was provided by Neil Craven whose father, Leonard Craven, was an artist.

Leonard Craven was born in Bradford in 1911 and was a self-taught artist.

Some of his earlier works were exhibited in the Huddersfield Art Society’s annual exhibitions.

His sketch of Cop Hill Farm features on the front of the calendar.

By selling the calendar the group hopes to raise funds so that they can preserve their findings to enable this valuable history to be preserved for future generations.

As the Examiner told yesterday, Friend to Friend is a local older people’s charity providing a range of activities that enable older people to enjoy a healthier, more active and less lonely old age.

It was formed 15 years ago and had a team of 50 volunteers working together to ensure that the older and isolated members of the community can get out and about.

Jane Burlingham, development worker for Friend to Friend said: “We really appreciate the work of the volunteers involved with the group, as without them this group would just not be able to run.

“We have volunteer drivers, Neil and Pat Craven and Sheila Sinclair who runs the group.

“We would also like to thank Kirklees Community Partnerships who provided us with a grant to cover the initial printing costs of the calendar.”

The calendars are available from the Meltham Library priced at just £3 or you can contact Friend to Friend on 01484 687773.
