AT the age of 16, he gained work experience at Huddersfield Royal Infirmary.
Now 20 years on, Neeraj Bhasin has returned to take up one of the hospital’s top jobs.
The father-of-one has joined the vascular surgery team at the Calderdale and Huddersfield NHS Trust and will perform highly-skilled surgery in a range of fields.
His work is set to include stroke prevention, varicose veins, abdominal aortic aneurysms and lower limb bypasses.
The Quarmby man said he is delighted to be providing care to the community he grew up in.
“It feels like coming home.
“I am also very excited to be joining such a dynamic, forward-thinking Trust which is developing services to try and constantly improve the quality and range of healthcare it delivers locally.”
This is Mr Bhasin’s first consultant’s position.
The former Huddersfield New College student spent time studying at Guys and St Thomas’ Hospital in London and has since worked on rotation at several hospitals in Yorkshire.
He also spent eight years as a doctor at the Galpharm Stadium having covered both Huddersfield Town and Giants matches.
During this time, he cared for football and rugby fans in a range of conditions – from bee stings to heart attacks.
He said: “We were very busy alongside the St John’s Ambulance teams at the stadium.
“I am now a big Town and Giants fan. “There was one occasion where we did resuscitate a fan who had a cardiac arrest.
Mr Bhasin, who is married to Vicky, a nurse who is expecting another baby, is the third generation of medics within his family.
His father, Bharat Bhasin, was a long-serving GP who was based in Milnsbridge for 30 years and retired in 2005.
His grandfather was also a doctor.
