TESCO bosses are expected to receive a grilling from objectors to the supermarket giant’s plans to build a village superstore.

Villagers’ pressure group Keep Holmfirth Special (KHS) has drafted a long list of questions for Tesco managers when the parties meet on Monday, January 9.

The meeting between KHS, Tesco and Tesco’s traffic consultant has been called as part of the plan’s mandatory public consultation which ends on January 16.

Tesco wants to build a giant 38,000 sq ft store on the former Midlothian Garage site, off New Mill Road, Holmfirth.

The plans for the store, which could generate up to £26m for the firm each year, were submitted to Kirklees Council late last month.

Opinion in the Holme Valley is divided on the proposal.

Some villagers say they are looking forward to a wider range of cheaper good while others are concerned about potential traffic problems and the impact a Tesco will have on village businesses. The controversial supermarket giant dropped plans for a larger store near the town in late 2009 following furious opposition from local campaigners.

KHS, which represents village businesses, hopes Tesco will answer many questions which it says the company has so far left unanswered.

The group plans to ask questions concerning everything from pricing and provision of ethical goods to traffic flows and the company’s commitment to investing in the surrounding area.

Margaret Dale, of KHS, said: “We are meeting with Tesco and their traffic consultant on January 9 and hope to receive answers to the questions left unanswered from our previous meeting with them held on November 10.”

Deborah Hayeems, corporate affairs manager at Tesco, said: “We are consulting widely with residents and community groups in Holmfirth to improve our store proposals where we can.

“We are pleased that the majority of people we speak to support our plans but, of course, people have questions about what we are proposing and we are keen to meet with interested groups, large and small, in the town to discuss what’s on their mind.”
