Mirfield schoolgirl Bailey Coppack needs brain tumour treatment in USA to save hearing

MUSIC is her passion.

But schoolgirl Bailey Coppack could soon be deaf if she doesn’t receive specialist treatment for a brain tumour.

The 12-year-old’s family have now launched a campaign to raise money so she and her family can go to America for proton therapy.

The ground-breaking and life-saving treatment can’t be accessed in the UK – but could be the only chance for Bailey to save her hearing and rid her of the cancerous growth.

Bailey’s mum Lisa Coppack, from Mirfield, told the Examiner she can’t believe the support the family has received from the community.

The mother-of-three said: “It’s overwhelming. My partner, Graham Ellis, is a huge Town fan and we’ve had so much support on the Huddersfield Town message boards on the Down at the Mac website.

“And we’re going to meet Dean Hoyle (inset) and Sean Jarvis to see what we can do with Town to fundraise.

“Other people have sent cheques through the post for us and offered to do challenges like the Three Peaks.”

Lisa, who works part-time for Kirklees Council, said Bailey’s school, Castle Hall, is also joining the fundraising bid.

Pupils and teachers are planning a sponsored walk from the Mirfield school to the Galpharm Stadium.

Bailey was diagnosed with a brain tumour after suddenly collapsing one day back in 2008.

Doctors have tried twice to operate and remove the tumour – but each time it has grown back.

And because the tumour is wrapped around her brain stem, specialists are worried the usual forms of radiotherapy, accessed in the UK, could paralyse her and stunt Bailey’s ability to learn.

Lisa was also devastated to learn that Bailey could go deaf with radiotherapy treatment: she has already lost her hearing in one ear.

She said: “For Bailey, losing her hearing would be terrible because she loves music so much.

“She has two iPods and she’s always got her earphones in and I’m trying to talk to her and calling her name and she can’t hear me.”
