TAXI drivers have demanded larger and better signs in St George’s Square to prevent head-on crashes.

Cabbie Manjit Singh says since the renovated St George’s Square reopened in October 2009, inadequate signage has left confused motorists driving the wrong way down Railway Street.

Now Kirklees Council is looking at the roads layout and signs and has promised action.

The lack of clear signs has led to near misses between cars and buses passing Huddersfield railway station, Mr Singh says.

Mr Singh says he and his fellow taxi drivers have to repeatedly warn motorists that they are travelling the wrong way down a one-way street.

Motorists have also been illegally driving into the taxi rank and the disabled parking area in front of the Head of Steam pub because of inadequate signage.

Mr Singh said: “There aren’t enough arrows on the road to show the right direction for traffic to go.

“Tourist coaches don’t know where to go and you get them trying to turn out the wrong way.
