WEST Yorkshire Police want to recruit members of the public as independent watchdogs.

The county’s Police Authority is looking for volunteer independent custody visitors.

Their role will involve checking that people held in police custody (and not yet convicted of any offence) are being properly treated.

Their tasks will include:

Speaking to the custody staff about the people being detained

Talking to the detainees about their welfare and rights

Checking – with the detainee’s permission – their record of detention

Inspecting and reporting on the conditions of cells, detention rooms, medical rooms, washing and kitchen areas, exercise yards and CCTV systems.
