Northern Indian Sikh community gather to celebrate Republic Day

THE Sikh Cultural Society North UK celebrated the 63rd Indian Republic Day.

Indian people from across the north of England met at Apna Venue in Springwood – formerly known as the Sikh Leisure Centre – to enjoy celebrations.

General secretary Inderpal Singh Randhawa said: “Republic Day is one of the greatest national celebrations observed throughout the country.

He added: “India became a sovereign democratic republic in 1950 with a written constitution and an elected parliament.

“It is also an occasion to pay homage to those who laid down their lives for the Independence, safety and security of the nation.”
