IF you lose your friends, your handbag or even your mind to drink on a night out in Huddersfield where would you turn?
That’s when a friendly face in a luminous orange jacket will be your very own ‘Street Angel’.
Street Angels are Christians who give up a few hours on Friday or Saturday evenings to make a huge difference to how people’s nights out in Huddersfield finish.
And they want more people to come forward and join their numbers.
The volunteering promises to be eventful and rewarding, as organiser Dianne Hughes explains.
“We are usually briefed by the police at the start of the evening who tell us if there is anything going on in town that we ought to be aware of, areas of particular activity.
“A team leader will carry the walkie talkie radios and link up to the CCTV operators.
“This ensures that in the event of us needing assistance we are easily able to get it.
“We carry small First Aid kits, bottles of water, biscuits, ‘sick bags,’ and flip flops in case girls lose their shoes.
“Our route takes us around the town covering most of the town centre streets, where there is a lot of activity.
“There is a serious side to our work as sometimes we do have to help people who are really very much the worse for drink.
“At about 2am we return to the Mission again and sign off with the CCTV and pack up for the night.”
The Street Angels are always looking for new volunteers. The only criteria required is that people are over 18 and are practising Christians. Would-be angels are encouraged to attend their annual general meeting on May 11 at Huddersfield Methodist Mission.
Huddersfield Street Angels were started in March 2007, due to an initiative of Kirklees Safer Partnerships and Churches Together in Huddersfield.
