A DRUG addict has been jailed after requesting to go to prison to get clean.
Manjit Singh, of Yew Green Avenue, Lockwood, was before Kirklees magistrates yesterday.
He admitted stealing three bottles of aftershave from the Kingsgate Centre branch of TK Maxx on April 16.
Linda Fowler, prosecuting, said that the 43-year-old was seen entering the store with a plastic carrier bag.
He went to the aftershave aisle and selected three bottles of Calvin Klein aftershave, worth £89.
Singh put the bottles in his bag and left the store without attempting to pay.
This activated the store alarm and he was detained by staff until police arrived.
In interview Singh said that he had been to the Lifeline drug treatment service to collect his script.
He said he was short of money and would have sold the aftershave to buy heroin.
Magistrates were told that Singh was last in court in July when he was sentenced to 12 weeks in custody for shoplifting.
Mark Brookes, defending, said he had held a responsible job before he started taking drugs.
He said: “That manifested itself both in the destruction of his relationship and his offending to feed his addiction.”
He said that Singh used his last period in custody to try and address his addiction.
Mr Brookes said that Singh felt that receiving another period in prison would go further to helping him with this.
Magistrates sent him to prison for 16 weeks.
