PLANS for an Asda store in Elland have been refused.
Councillors on the planning committee ruled that the highways issues a store may create meant the application had to be refused.
It ends the latest saga of store wars in Elland.
Asda and Morrisons went head to head to build a major supermarket in the town, with the Morrisons application being approved last July.
At the same meeting the Asda application was deferred after the supermarket asked for time to re-submit amendments to their plans.
The issues then, and for Calderdale councillors this week, were traffic-related and the whole plan was refused.
Asda say their plans for Elland would have created 200 jobs and brought a massive boost to the local economy.
But now it’s been refused the next step remains unclear. They could push for a public inquiry or re-submit a revised application or drop the plans altogether.
Work on the Morrisons supermarket has started.
