Counting begins in Kirklees and Calderdale elections
VOTES will be counted in Huddersfield, Dewsbury and Halifax today.
Twenty-three of the 69 seats on Kirklees Council are up for grabs today as well as 17 of the 51 on Calderdale Council.
Counting begins at 9am at Huddersfield Sports Centre for the 13 wards in Huddersfield, Colne Valley, Holme Valley, Kirkburton and Denby Dale.
The 10 seats in north Kirklees will be decided at Dewsbury Sports Centre.
Calderdale’s count will take place at the North Bridge Leisure Centre at Halifax.
Voters in both council areas went to the polls yesterday.
The polling stations opened at 7am and closed at 10pm last night.
Labour currently has 27 seats on Kirklees, followed by the Conservatives on 21, the Lib Dems with 14 and the Greens on four. There are three independents.
In Calderdale, the Conservatives have 21 seats, Labour and the Lib Dems hold 13 each and there are four independents.
Across West Yorkshire, voters in other areas were also taking part in referendums on directly-elected mayors.
Residents in Leeds, Wakefield and Bradford have been asked whether they want a mayor to run city affairs.
Kirklees Council rejected the idea of an elected mayor and agreed to stick with a Cabinet electing the council leader.
The civic role of the mayor is unaffected.
Voters across Britain were expected to dish out a mid-term bruising to the Westminster coalition parties as they headed to the polls.
Conservatives and Liberal Democrats were braced to lose hundreds of the around 5,000 seats at stake on 181 local councils across England, Scotland and Wales.
But the Tories were hoping for a better result in the capital, where Mayor Boris Johnson was defying the national trend to remain favourite to retain City Hall.
Recent opinion polls have shown a clear lead for Labour – often in double digits – as the Government has wrestled with a month-long string of difficulties.
