IT promises to be a day to remember.

The Olympic torch will be coming through Huddersfield on Sunday, June 24, and Kirklees Council has lined up an afternoon of fun and entertainment in Greenhead Park.

The theme is to get families involved and the event called Parkfest 2012 is designed to do just that.

It will be six hours of non-stop activities from noon to 6pm and follows on from two recent huge weekend events in the park featuring Mumford And Sons and then last week’s three days of Party In The Park from Friday to Sunday featuring everything from Abba and Bee Gees tributes through classical in the form of Opera North and finishing with pop star Tinchy Stryder.

At Parkfest 2012 there will be arenas packed with different sports, crafts, music and street performers.

Kirklees Council cabinet Member Clr Jean Calvert said: “This is a fantastic way to celebrate the Olympic Torch coming to Kirklees.

“Everyone can enjoy cheering on the torchbearers and then come into Greenhead Park to continue the celebration with Parkfest 2012.”

There will be some quirky acts from street performers.

One you won’t want to miss is Artemis, a troupe of performers with an international reputation for creative street art and stilt performance featuring a fusion of elaborate costumes, live music, physical theatre and circus skills.

Robo Runner will test your pedal power, get in a spin with Circus Fudge or testing your dancing skills with Strictly Dumb Prancing.

Crafty Devilz will be on hand to teach people circus skills such as juggling.

To mark this special occasion there will be a giant urban canvas created on the day, using a 500-year-old chalking technique to create a massive work of art. Everyone is encouraged to get involved and make their mark.

There will be live music on the bandstand throughout the day including Skedaddle, Manhattan Sound Big Band, Phoenix New Orleans Jazz Band, Scissett Youth Brass Band and more.

People can get into the sporting spirit and try out new sports, watch displays and learn new skills.

Huddersfield Town Football Club will be running sporting activities throughout the day.

There will also be the chance to have go at different sports including fencing, volleyball, kwik cricket and tennis.

Team Xtreme will be demonstrating skateboarding and BMX skills or for those who prefer something a little less extreme there will be giant board games to play including giant Snakes ‘n’ Ladders.

Big Dance 2012 was officially launched in Kirklees at the Galpharm Stadium with dance performances by over 600 children from schools across the borough.

There will be another opportunity to see this music and dance showcase at Parkfest 2012, encouraging everyone to get their toes tapping, whether its cheerleading, street dance or even the New Zealand dance the haka.

Children can get creative by making their own Olympic Torch or entering the design a flag competition.

Children can wave their flag as the Olympic Torch Relay goes by and then hand in their entries to the information marquee.

All entries will be displayed during the event.
