MORE THAN 400 pupils were evacuated from Crosland Moor Junior School on Wednesday following a suspected gas leak.

The Dryclough Road school closed and the children were sent to nearby Moor End Academy after several members of staff reported smelling gas at around 11.30am.

Engineers from gas emergency service Northern Gas Networks spent 80 minutes at the school carrying out tests.

They left at 12.50pm after failing to find a leak.

A spokeswoman said: “This was a standard amount of time. Our engineers carried out all the required tests, there were no gas readings on site.”

A Kirklees Council spokesman added: “The children were evacuated to nearby Moor End Academy and were sent home from 1pm while the gas supply was investigated.

“It proved to be a false alarm and the school is now operating as normal.”
