A WOMAN who smashed the window of a house was caught out by the distinctive hat she was wearing.

Samantha Clay, 22, pleaded guilty to criminal damage when she appeared before Kirklees magistrates.

She had smashed the window of a property on Halifax Road in Staincliffe in the early hours of June 8.

Alex Bozman, prosecuting, said the house next to a busy road was rented by Karen Moore.

Ms Moore was woken just before 3am by the sound of breaking glass.

Mr Bozman said: “She looked out of the window and saw a group of four females running away.

“She went downstairs and found that a single pane of glass had been smashed and there were glass fragments in the living room.”

The Huddersfield bench was told that Ms Moore called police and was able to describe the clothing of the women.

The incident was also captured on CCTV, with Clay shown to be wearing a distinctive deerstalker hat.

Police tracked down the group nearby but the other three were found not to be involved.

Clay, of Headfield View in Thornhill Lees, said that she had taken a side swipe at the window was she was walking past.

She said she was drunk at the time, having sunk three litres of cider and some shorts.

Clay admitted that she could turn nasty after drinking but didn’t know why she had put her hand through the window.

The window cost £150 to repair, which magistrates ordered her to pay in compensation.

They also told Clay to pay £85 in court costs.
