AND they’re off – with a Shabang!

A group of triathletes are taking on a huge challenge in aid of a Slaithwaite special needs theatre group.

Mick Lunn, director of Colne Valley Rubber, wanted to help raise money for Shabang because of the support it offers to his three-year-old nephew Toby Stubbs.

Toby was born with a series of disabilities including a visual impairment, Microcephaly, known as small brain and head, Global Development Delay and West Syndrome – a form of Epilepsy.

His family have benefited greatly from Shabang and have seen first hand how the charity has helped children with special needs.

Accompanied by two fellow directors from the company – Amanda Randall and John Risdale – Mick hopes to take on The People’s Triathlon.

Amanda will be starting with the 1,500 metre swim, followed by Michael cycling 40k and then John will finish the triathlon with a 10k run.

Toby’s mum Lynsey Stubbs said: “I’m over the moon that the group have decided to support Shabang.

“The group are amazing and they don’t charge parents any money, it is completely free of charge.

“Shabang provides a place for children to get a new sense of experience and play and also it gives parents a chance to meet up and meet other parents in similar circumstances.

“There’s also someone to talk to and it offers great support.

“I don’t know where we would be without it.

“Good luck to the three of them.”

Toby regular attends one of the two sessions running each week at The Watershed, Slaithwaite.

Designed for children under five with additional learning needs and their families, Shabang is hosted by Captain Barnacle Bill and Old Barmy Bess.

Little Tiddlers, as they are referred to, use song, signing, music, puppetry, multi sensory techniques and repeated routines to help communication, concentration and general development.

The People’s Triathlon is a new event this year.

The aim is to get everyone involved with the sport and to embrace the London 2012 spirit.

The trio are taking on the Olympic challenge which is the most enduring of the four categories.

The event will be at Dearnford Lake Whitchurch, Shropshire, on July 29.

Following the open water swim is a cycle around the country roads followed by a run around the lake.
