PLANS to remove paid staff from rural libraries have not been officially dropped – but a politician admitted Kirklees Council had underestimated opposition to the controversial proposal.

More than 8,000 people have signed a petition against the withdrawal of librarians from centres in Golcar, Lepton, Shepley, Honley, Denby Dale and Kirkheaton.

Kirklees Cabinet member for resources Clr Shabir Pandor admitted the council had misjudged the public mood.

“We thought there would be a mass rush of volunteers coming forward,” said the Batley West Labour man.

“Unfortunately it wasn’t as clear cut as we expected.

“The consultation has established there are concerns about people getting involved as volunteers.

“If we get expressions of interest in helping run local libraries we will explore that further. If no volunteers come forward then it won’t be pursued.”

Clr Pandor made the comments while being questioned about the libraries issue at the monthly council meeting at Huddersfield Town Hall.

The Cabinet member was challenged by Holme Valley North independent Clr Charles Greaves to confirm that the proposal to withdraw staff was now “in the bin”.

Clr Pandor replied: “I wouldn’t say the seven libraries proposal has gone away.”
