HUDDERSFIELD Town winger Adam Hammill has been arrested for alleged assault.

The 24-year-old – on loan to the Terriers from Wolves – was last night in police cells in Liverpool after being arrested in the early hours of Sunday morning.

He is alleged to have assaulted two female paramedics in an incident in the city centre shortly before 4am.

It is understood Hammill himself was taken to hospital for treatment before being detained by Merseyside Police.

Ambulance chiefs in Liverpool confirmed two members of staff had been attacked.

And Huddersfield Town confirmed there had been an incident involving Hammill.

Nigel Clibbens, the club’s chief executive, said: “We have been made aware of an incident that took place in Merseyside involving Adam Hammill.

“The matter is being investigated by the police and therefore it would be inappropriate for the club to make any further comment at this stage.

“As soon as we were made aware of this incident, we contacted Wolverhampton Wanderers to make them fully aware”.

A spokesman for the ambulance service in Liverpool said crews had responded to a 999 call.

The spokesman for North West Ambulance Service said that an ambulance crew was called to a report of a 16-year-old girl suffering a leg injury near a Revolution bar in Liverpool city centre at 3.39am yesterday morning.

When the crew arrived some minutes later, they were forced to activate their two-way radio, due to a disturbance.

The crew were then assaulted.

The spokesman added: “This type of incident is unacceptable. We always support our crews in taking further action after incidents like this.”

The player had made his comeback from injury for Town in their 1-0 win at Birmingham only hours earlier.

Hammill, who was brought up on Merseyside and was a product of the Liverpool Academy, had been out of action since mid September with a knee injury.

Town boss Simon Grayson had snapped up the winger on August 31, on the last day of the transfer window, and signed him on loan until January.

The player – bought by Wolves from Barnsley last year for £½m – had hoped to play regular football after a series of loan moves.

He had spent two years at Barnsley having had loan spells at Dunfermline, Southampton and Blackpool, where he worked with Grayson.

The move to Wolves did not work out and he had been loaned out again, to Middlesbrough.
