MORE bridge strengthening work will close a road through Milnsbridge this weekend – weather permitting.

A 14-week project to reinforce the bridge over the River Colne has already proved controversial.

Kirklees Council has announced that the bridge, previously open to one-way traffic, will be shut altogether for around 28 hours.

The plan is for the road to close at 6pm on Saturday and re-open a 10pm on Sunday.

The work, which has blighted drivers and traders, was hit by storms last month as scaffolding under the bridge was virtually washed away.

Contractors had to wait until the river levels subsided before they could clear up the old scaffolding.

That has now been done and new scaffolding will be put in place in preparation for key weekend works.

The timing of the closures are subject to change and, says the council, depend on the weather.
