HUDDERSFIELD ring road is to have new overhead lights.

Work is set to start replacing some of the high lighting columns on Huddersfield Ring Road and New Street.

The 18-metre high lighting columns illuminate the ring road and certain parts of the town centre as well as nearby areas such as car parks and the bus station.

The columns have been there for around 40 years and need replacing.

Kirklees Council’s Streetscene and Housing Service is set to start work on replacing these with new modern columns fitted with the most efficient light units now available.

The work will start on Monday with the removal of seven of the columns for safety reasons in advance of the winter.

Over the coming months work will continue as part of a rolling programme to replace other columns.

Specialist equipment will be brought in due to the size of the columns to enable the work to be carried out safely.

It is hoped that the columns will be replaced at their existing locations.

The majority of work will be carried out during the evening to minimise disruption.
