£23m: The true cost of booze to the NHS hospitals in our area in one year - what do you think?

THE true cost of alcohol consumption on Kirklees health care providers has been revealed in a new online map.

National charity, Alcohol Concern, has produced the break down which shows in Kirklees £23million is spent on alcohol-related hospital admissions.

The money was spent on treating 8,156 adults for alcohol-related inpatient admissions in 2010/11 – including 2,050 wholly due to alcohol.

The breakdown reveals that the cost to accident and emergency admissions was £5.5m; inpatient admissions cost £13m and the cost to outpatient admissions was £7.2m.

The launch of the map comes six months before local authorities take on responsibility for public health.
